Mauser authorized several countries to make thier gun I myself have a checozlovokian carbine. They are all 98 actions which is still the most dependable action there is. You can check out "The History of Mauser" it will tell you about all the manufactuers of them

The Mauser brothers approached the Swedish government with their new repeating rifle.
Norway and Sweden favored the 6.5x55 also presented by the Mausers.
The first rifle, the 94, was a cavalry carbine with about a 19.5 inch barrel, mannlicher.

The m96 model was obviously developed in 1896.  The 94, 1894.
Initially the first few thousand of the Mausers were made at the Oberndorf factory in Germany.
These mausers were rated at I believe 45,000 cup.
The Swedes then began making their own 96 with their much higher quality steel at the Husqvarna, etc factories.  The Swedish Swedish Mauser is rated to about 62,000 cup (as reviewed and researched by a Ludwig Olson and referred to in his book BOok of Mausers)
The m96 has about a 29.3 inch barrel, fast twist, close on cocking action.
Believe it or not, if the rifle cannot shoot within 1.3 inches at 100 meters (minute of angle)
it is not accurate enough and will be returned for refurbishing.

The Swedish mauser has got to be the smoothest action I have ever handled.  The 98 is of course the pinnacle of perfection, however, I have handled an unfired 98 and let me tell you , it is a combat ready rifle, pretty sloppy (lateral movement) upon working the bolt.  AFter I put over 1000 rounds at the range and polishing paper to the feed ramp, rails etc, only then did it smoothen up.
THe 96 action and the 98 action should not be compared anyway.  Kind of like comparing the first minvan with a new design suv.
The 96 has only two locking lugs, but, is still rated 62,000 cup( I really believe it is higher, I will have to try to find the information again).
Handling either the model 96 or its offspring, the m36 (23.6 inch barrel) is a joy.  EVen though the bolt handle is a t bolt design (any turned down bolts were locally done or the few alleged cavalry rifles) and is actually very easy to use.

With either mauser model , the 38 or the 96, using factory Remington swede ammo , which is a 140 grain spitzer at about 2500 fps,  the iron sighted rifles easily provide minute of angle five round groups at 100 yards.
Oh, and for those who believe the Yugo M48 has teak for the riflestock, uh no.

Bottom line, if you can find a Swedish Mauser for less than 400 bucks, grab it, clean it, of course make sure that the 12 serial numbers match or drop the purchase price.
Definitely hit the GOOGLE and punch in Swedish Mauser, 6.5x55, swede accuracy, etc.
If you get hooked on the Swede rifle and its cartridge we have a support group ready for you.
You would be surprised how many notable gun writers love the Swede rifle and its cartridge.  Many.

Fantastic rifles for sure. Most here in the U.S. underrate the power of this round, but in Europe, they consider it adequate for large stags and Moose. This is due to the very long  and heavy bullets at a fast twist rate that there rifles use to great effect. Penetration, even in very large animals is usually complete.

As others pointed out, the steel that went into these rifles was above and beyond what the German steel plants were capable of at the time, and that is saying something! These rifles have been popular sporters for good reason.
