Updated Equipment Shortages as of 26 August (25 days until the tournament)

We have truly learned this week that the terrain and heat do not bode well for fletchings and glue even with the arrows in AC all day before going to the range.  I purchased an Arizona EZ Fletch and paid more for priority shipping than I did for the product so I can refletch over 2 dozen arrows we have already turned into bare sticks!  It is comical yet frustrating at the same time with the 3D tournament to be aired on TV only 25 days away.  We are working together to pull off equipment shortages but it isn't working too well; however, orders via standard shipping are still making it here within 10 days so at least that is going in our favor!

The participants have already been commenting on how this range is bringing a piece of home to our little spance of the desert.  For a 15 month tour, it is making it go by a lot faster with each passing day and all the shooters coming out each morning and evening it has made my time go by much much faster!  MHR and IBO have hit a home run and made all the coordination very worth while and the Soldiers couldn't be more pleased with the support everyone has shown for this range!  As you can see, most of the new members are coming from the group of Soldiers who have gone through the NASP classes with me two nights a week and are shooting on the range every morning at 0500 a.m. and again at 1700 (5 p.m.) daily.

Needed:
- 5   Dozen, 30", Easton XX75, 2117 arrows (we are really going through arrows fast!)
- 0   Bow press (portable or table top) [purchased already]
- 0   Allen Wrench Sets [received already]
- 19 Arm Guards
- 17 kisser buttons
- 3   In-line peep sites (with the rubber hose) [purchased 15 already]
- 9   TRU Fire Releases
- 2   Tube Target Quivers with belt clip
- 0   Fletching Jig or EZ Fletch [purchased already]
- 1   Arrow Scraper
- 2   Tubes fletching glue (carbon and aluminum for inserts, knocks, and fletchings)
- 3   Tubes of string wax
- 0   String Loops [purchased already]
- 36 Brass knock points [purchased 1/2 already]
- 1   LH Hostage style or flipper arrow rests
- 4   RH Hostage style or flipper arrow rests
- 18 Wrist Straps/slings
- 0   String Serving Kit (Bohning) w/ extra Spool
- 2   TruGlo 5 pin sites [every bow doesn't have a site yet]
- 1   String for a RH Hoyt ProTek 2000 (didn't have a string on it when it arrived)
- 17 Plano Protector Series Bow Cases (we have to transport the bows a lot)
- 100+ Field points for Easton XX75 2117 and 2219 Aluminum arrows (our backdrops aren't too kind over here so we will fly through these even after filing them down every so often)

Due to some changes in my schedule, the first weekend of the 3D Tournament has been changed to 19, 20, 21 September and the second weekend of the tournament will be 26, 27, 28 September.

The 142nd CSSB and Garrison Command will be opening the 3D Archery range NLT 14 August.  However, each person wishing to utilize the archery range must first complete the safety class and then qualify on the range in order to receive a range card.

To complete the class, participants must attend Part 1 and Part 2 of the National Archery in Schools Program curriculum being taught each week through September 3, 2008.  Part I will be taught on Mondays from 1700 - 1830 and Part II will be taught on Wednesdays from 1700 - 1830; both in Memorial Hall.  It does not matter if participants can attend Part I and Part II in the same week, as long as Part I and Part II are attended consecutively (in order) prior to September 3rd.  Part I can be attended with Class 1 and Part II can be attended the following Wednesday with Class 2.  There will only be four classes offered for each part.  Participants will be fitted, or afforded the opportunity to choose, which compound bow and set up fits their stature during each portion of the class.

Class 1

NASP Part I - Monday, 11 August 08, 1700 - 1830

NASP Part II - Wednesday, 13 August 08, 1700 - 1830

Class 2

NASP Part I - Monday, 18 August 08, 1700 - 1830

NASP Part II - Wednesday, 20 August 08, 1700 - 1830

Class 3

NASP Part I - Monday, 25 August 08, 1700 - 1830

NASP Part II - Wednesday, 27 August 08, 1700 - 1830

Class 4

NASP Part I - Monday, 1 September 08, 1700 - 1830

NASP Part II - Wednesday, 3 September 08, 1700 - 1830

After completing the required safety class, each participant will then be required to qualify on the archery range to demonstrate the safety practices taught in class as well as their ability to shoot so that they can be put in their respective category for the first ever, Iraq IBO World Qualifying 3D Archery Tournament sponsored by organizations with MyHuntingRoom.com and the International Bowhunting Organization (IBO).

The POCs for this event are CPT John Gray and SGT Amanda Gorman at DSN 833-5577 or 833-1416.

Whoops, I just caught a major mistake I have listed in the forum....we have 20 bows (counting the BowTech Tribute they sent me personally).  We will use the 20 bows we have on hand to create the flights with so approximately 60 archers will be able to compete each day for the tournament (soon to be officially named).

Since I can't figure out how to edit my forum, I will post a comment about it:

Competitors in the 3D Tournament can be anyone (military or civilian to include KBR employees) but only US uniformed personnel can win the larger hunting trips and prizes.  'Other than US military' competitors are still eligible to win other prizes.

For normal range use, anyone can shoot as long as they have met the safety requirements and prerequisites offered before using the range.  Range Cards will be issued to qualified users.

Thank you! to everyone that donated from MHR for Operation 3D to soon become a reality for those of us over here in Iraq!

I have created a photo album under my page (SitsWithaBow) that will get updated at least weekly on the progress and build up to the first ever IBO Sanctioned 3D World Qualifying Archery Tournament.  The bows, arrows, targets, and additional equipment have finally traveled across the pond and made it to COB Adder, Iraq.

We are still in need of some critical equipment if anyone has some insight as where we can purchase it at cost or have donated (you become official sponsor of range with donations).  They can be mailed in a Priority Flat Rate box from the post office directly to me for $8.95 no matter what the weight is.  The shipping address is:

The first "to do" is the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) that will be taught to everyone interested in utilizing the 3D range as a source of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) and to qualify for the 3D Tournament.  Safety First!  As we are teaching the course, the engineers will finalize the range which has been staked out and approved.  Once the range is complete, the NASP classroom portion should be complete and we will begin the first round of qualifiers to use the range.  Starting September 1st, qualifying will begin for the 3D tournament and archers will be allowed to shoot various bows to see which best suits their needs so we can develop the flights based on availability of personnel (mission loads) and when the bow will be available (quite in depth for only 28 bows and probably 300 archers).

Tenatively, we are scheduled to host the first round of the tournament (archers only shoot one time) on 26-28 September and the second round for those who couldn't make the first round on 3-5 October.  Our Garrison command is trying to reach Ted Nugent to see if he could grace us with his presence on the range and then host a rock concert at night.  We'll keep our fingers crossed but we haven't successfully reached his agent or organization yet.

Due to the significant interest, we will only be able to allow COB Adder Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guard, DoD employees and Coalition Soldiers stationed here to shoot in the competition due to several other qualifying factors and safety measures.  Donated prizes such as hunting trips will only be awarded to US uniformed personnel; sorry! Other prizes such as archery and sporting goods accessories, TShirts, mugs, decals, trophies, etc. will be awarded to any (civilian, coalition, or armed forces) winner of their respective category

If you are in Iraq or stationed at COB Adder, feel free to contact me on the global at john.gray@iraq.centcom.mil or john.e.gray1@us.army.mil for more information on the range and tournament. I can also be reached at those addresses for any information leading to the purchase or procurement of the above mentioned items we are still after.  :-)

I will keep everyone posted!

Hey Sir! Just wanted to add that its a great thing, what you are doing with the range in Iraq. I wish I would have had the time and knowledge to think of that when I was there. Thats just little indicators that lead me to believe you are a great CO. I'm sure your soldiers will greatly appreciate it. Good Luck Sir!
